Josie’s Place

The next stop on our list is Josie’s Place, a restaurant located at the Renninger’s Farmer’s Market (a.k.a. Dirt Mall) off Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven. Matt reverted back to his normal two eggs, meat (sausage patty) and homefries platter. Mike, who was celebrating his anniversary, wanted to relive his glory days and ordered the “Bachelor’s Breakfast”. This included two eggs (scrambled), two sausage links, two slices of bacon, fried onions, and homefries all scrambled together. Tonto went with the “Mess”, which consists of two eggs, country ham, onions, green peppers, and homefries scrambled together with a side of smoked sausage. Bryan took the advice of one of our readers, Tonya, and ordered the “Sausage Gravy” meal, which is simply sausage gravy served over toast and homefries. All of our meals were served with either white or wheat toast. Matt was obviously flustered with this decision and tried to order rye toast. He was shot down and briefly laughed at by our waitress.

Establishment: 5/5 – Josie’s Place is a perfectly-sized restaurant with plenty of seating. You can either choose to sit in a large booth or the diner counter. The interior is very clean and sanitary. Our silverware was served in little plastic bags, which is an interesting touch. Tonto gushed about their salt and pepper shakers…it’s the little things. Parking is not an issue here.

Service: 5/5 – Another perfect score. Our waitress was very nice and offered to refill our coffee multiple times. It was a 10-minute wait from the time we ordered until we received our food. That gave us plenty of time to listen to Mike reminisce about all of his glorious years of marriage.

Appearance: 4/5 – The food portions were very large. Our coffee mugs were also sizable compared to some of the other restaurants we visited.

Taste: 5/5 – All of our food was very appetizing. The homefries were freshly cut and cooked just right. All three versions of the sausages earned praise. Matt thought his patty tasted similar to McDonald’s, but he still enjoyed it. The smoked sausage that Tonto ordered wasn’t as dry as the one served at the Freidensburg Country Restaurant. The Sausage Gravy meal ended up being a good recommendation by Tonya. It was served hot and proved to be very filling.

Price: 4/5 – As you can see from the menu, all of their prices are very reasonable. The only negative is that this is a cash-only restaurant. They do have an ATM available in case you only carry credit cards.

In case you can’t tell, we really enjoyed our meals at Josie’s Place. It was certainly one of, if not the best we’ve had so far. If you are looking for a breakfast spot that is delicious, cheap and clean, then this is the place for you. It definitely earned another trip in the near future.
