Country Squire

Country Squire Restaurant and Motel is an old-fashioned establishment located off Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven. It’s iconic sign is hard to miss from the busy highway. Our crew this morning was composed of Bryan, Matt and Mike. We also had a special fan join us, who recognized the crew after stopping on her way home from work. We must be getting popular…

As you can see from the picture above, they had their specials of the day presented as you entered the restaurant. Our special fan was the only one who ordered from this menu – choosing the Broccoli and Cheese Omelette with homefries. Matt and Mike both ordered the two-eggs with meat meal. Matt, being the sausage enthusiast that he is, chose the sausage patty option with scrambled eggs. Mike on the other hand, went with over-easy eggs with bacon. Bryan decided to go a different route and ordered waffles with butter and syrup. He also ordered a side of bacon.

Establishment: 3/5 – We arrived at the shady-looking motel/restaurant around 8:30 a.m. to a full parking lot. Bryan and Mike both had to park in the motel section of the lot. We were expecting a completely packed restaurant, but that wasn’t the case. There are two dining sections – a very small, diner-style section to the right (this was completely packed) – and a larger, banquet-style dining room to the left (this was completely empty). Since this is a seat-yourself restaurant, we decided to sit in the empty dining room. The interior was very old and included wooden tables and chairs.

Service: 4.5/5 – We received our food rather quickly, waiting only 9-minutes. Our waitress was very hospitable and offered us frequent refills on our coffee and orange juice. She asked Bryan if he wanted his bacon “regular” or “crispy”. That was a first for us. The waitress was also very proud of herself for not spilling any coffee on Bryan’s phone, which he mistakenly had laying next to his mug. A half of a point was deducted because Bryan did not originally receive syrup with his waffles and had to ask for it.

Appearance: 4/5 – Nothing looked bad. In fact, our special fan’s omelette was very large and the homefries looked fresh. Bryan and Mike both thought the strips of bacon were also large. I can’t forget to mention the size of the coffee mugs! They were pretty small…hence the one-point deduction.

Taste: 3/5 – Not terrible. Our special fan had zero complaints about her meal. Matt and Mike both thought their meals were not that hot. The homefries, although freshly cut, were lukewarm at best. They were topped with caramelized onions. The coffee tasted a little burnt and watery. Bryan thought his waffles were okay, but nothing special. The bacon was really good and was cooked perfectly. Overall, we’d say the food was average.

Price: 4.5/5 – It was Matt’s turn to pay and he was nice enough to pick up our fan’s bill! She even received a free coffee from the restaurant for ordering one of their specials! Our total bill was around $35, which isn’t bad for four people.

Will we be jumping out of bed to eat breakfast at Country Squire? Probably not. It’s hard to justify coming here instead of Robin’s Diner down the road, but it does provide you with another option for a cheap and fast meal. They serve breakfast all day, which is nice. You could always go there, eat a big breakfast, then rent a room and sleep it off!
