This morning, we broke our fast at the new Point Diner in Tamaqua. It just opened at the end of December, so our crew decided to check out what they had to offer. This morning’s posse consisted of Bryan, Mike and Kevin. Matt was still in sunny Florida while Tonto was hard at work brewing beer.

The Point Diner is located on Mauch Chunk Street at the five points intersection in downtown Tamaqua. It was most recently a pool hall, and before that, a magic shop. We didn’t have much food to choose from as their menu was rather limited. Bryan, channeling his inner Matt, ordered three eggs (scrambled), with homefries and a side of sausage. Mike decided to go with the Eggs Benedict with homefries, toast and a side of bacon. He also received onions and peppers on his homefries. Kevin ended up ordering a spinach and cheese omelette with homefries and toast.

Establishment: 4/5 – Neat little brick building that juts out at the intersection. Parking could be an issue if it’s busy. We had to park on the street next to Freddy’s Pub. They have a lobby located at the entrance that includes leather chairs. The interior of the diner has three booths, four tables that each sit four customers, and six bar stools at the counter. The place isn’t that big, but it didn’t matter this morning. The walls were lined with old records that included the likes of The Beach Boys, CCR, and The Doors. They also have pictures of famous musicians hanging on the wall. Pretty cool.

Service: 5/5 – Only a 16-minute wait to receive our food. Our waitress was very fast with our coffee and refilled our tiny mugs frequently. No complaints here.

Appearance: 5/5 – Our food was served on large, square plates that looked pretty fancy. The portions of food were rather large as well. Above-average as far as appearance goes.

Taste: 3/5 – Taste was about average. Bryan enjoyed the homefries, but Mike thought his peppers didn’t taste fresh. The Eggs Benedict was “eh”, according to Mike. Bryan thought his eggs were cooked properly and were served warm. The sausage links, however, were the frozen “Brown-n-Serve” ones from Banquet. Bryan thought they were rather soggy and somewhat cold. Kevin enjoyed his spinach and cheese omelette, but didn’t think it was overly noteworthy.

Price: 5/5 – The price was pretty cheap. Our bill totaled a little over $27 for the three of us. That averages (for the mathematically challenged) to $9 a person.

All in all, the Point Diner is a nice little restaurant for those of you in the Tamaqua area looking for a cheap place to eat breakfast. There isn’t many breakfast spots in this area ever since the Tamaqua Diner closed last year. They are open 24 hours on the weekends and until 2 p.m. during the week. If you could take the appearance of the Point Diner and combine it with the taste and quality of the food at let’s say McDonald’s Lunch in Girardville, you’d have a damn good restaurant.
