Clover Fire Co.

The Clover Fire Company in Heckscherville held their biweekly breakfast buffet this morning and Bryan, Mike and Kevin were there for a taste test. Our crew was missing Matt and Tonto today; Matt was visiting with family while Tonto was sneezing all morning. Get well soon, Tonto!

We arrived at the Clover around 9:00 a.m.  You pay the $8.00 admission as you enter the fire hall. There were plenty of seats available for us to choose from. We were able to go up and get our food as soon as we sat down. The food that was available from the buffet included: scrambled eggs, homefries, French Toast, pancakes, smoked sausage, sausage patties, bacon, ham, toast and S.O.S. The drinks included coffee, hot tea, orange and tomato juice. A frequent customer informed us that the volunteers take special orders for over-easy eggs and scrapple, which they then deliver to your table. We couldn’t find any signs that said this, but Bryan asked one of the volunteers and he confirmed. Bryan decided to order the scrapple (pictured below).

Scrapple (made to order)

Establishment: 3/5 – The Clover is an old fire hall that isn’t much to look at. The exterior has letters falling off and the interior is average. There were roughly 16-17 tables set up, each seating six people. The tables were clean when we arrived. The buffet set-up was efficient and well-orchestrated by the volunteers.

Service: 5/5 – This was a buffet, so we were able to serve ourselves, including the drinks. It was a nice bonus to be able to order over-easy eggs and scrapple. The scrapple that Bryan ordered came out right away.

Appearance: 3/5 – The food looked about average. Nothing really stood out here.

Taste: 3/5 – Once again, it was about average. The three of us all thought the bacon was very good. The homefries were a little mushy and had onions in them, which some people may not like. We thought the smoked sausage was a little dry this morning. Mike tried the S.O.S. and thought it was okay. Bryan enjoyed his scrapple, which was thin and crispy. The food didn’t taste bad, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.

Price: 5/5 – This morning’s meal cost $8 for all-you-can-eat. Prices will be changing beginning May 13, though. They had these notices on the tables, informing customers of a $1 price increase. Still, $9 isn’t bad for the amount of food you can shove down your gullet here.

Overall, the Clover Fire Company provided us with a hearty breakfast – all three of us left with full stomachs. It was very comparable to the buffet at Immaculate Conception Hall, though with more food options. Immaculate Conception was also cheaper than the Clover. They serve their breakfast buffet every other Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Their next breakfast is May 13. Check it out and continue to support our local Schuylkill County fire departments!
