Market Square Coffee House is located at 118 W. Market Street in downtown Orwigsburg. We’ve been getting a lot of messages asking us to eat here so we decided to give in and check it out. Today’s crew consisted of Bryan, Kevin, Matt and Mike. Tonto had to work once again. Boo.
We arrived at the Coffee House around 8:30 a.m. There were a few parking spots available out front near the square. You have to order your food or beverage at the register and they will deliver it to your table. They have a regular breakfast menu that is posted on a blackboard on the wall, along with a list of assorted beverages. Breakfast specials were posted at the counter. Bryan ended up ordering the “House Biscuits-n-Gravy,” which was a Buttermilk biscuit topped with sausage gravy. He also ordered two over-easy eggs, bacon and hash browns, which was an optional add-on with his meal. Kevin, our self-proclaimed health-nut, ordered the “Health Nut Breakfast,” which was an egg-white omelette with Swiss, sauteed kale and grape tomatoes. It also came with a parfait that included fresh fruit, vanilla yogurt and honey granola. Matt went with the “Square Deal” meal, which consisted of two eggs, choice of meat (obviously Matt chose the sausage), choice of bread (he chose bagel), and home fries. Mike ended up ordering the “Lone Star Benedict.” This meal consisted of pulled pork and home fries, topped with two eggs any style (over-easy), over grilled Texas toast. It is finished with grilled onions, cheddar, scallions and gravy. As far as coffee goes, Matt and Mike both ordered regular coffees while Bryan ordered a latte. Our health nut went with a water.

Establishment: 4/5 – Neat little local coffee shop. It is very small inside with only four tables and a counter with four stools. This isn’t a restaurant, just a small shop that serves food and coffee. The interior is very clean and has a warmth to it. Very comfortable atmosphere.
Service: 4/5 – Like I stated above, you have to order at the register first, then the workers will deliver the meal to your table. It took us 25-minutes to receive our meals after we ordered. One of the workers, whom we assume is the owner, checked on us throughout our meal and turned on the TV so we could listen to some music. Kevin wasn’t served his water right away and had to go back up to the counter and get it. Other than that, we had no complaints over the service here.
Appearance: 4/5 – All of our meals looked really good, especially Mike’s Lone Star Benedict. The portion sizes were large and everything came out hot.
Taste: 4/5 – Bryan’s biscuit and gravy tasted delicious. The biscuit was sliced in half and pretty thick. The bacon was a little overcooked and salty, but still okay. The hash browns he got with his meal were of the frozen McDonald’s variety, which may have cost them a point. Mike really enjoyed his pulled pork. It had a sweet flavor to it and the meal as a whole was a bit spicy. Kevin raved over his egg-white omelette and Matt had no complaints over his meal. The homefries were freshly cut potatoes that were blackened and had a peppery taste.
Price: 4.5/5 – Our bill totaled $38.50 for the four of us. This is a little above-average for four people, but it certainly makes up for it with the amount of food that is served. You get more than you pay for.
All in all, the Market Square Coffee House is a neat little place that we would recommend to anyone. You can come in here with a book or laptop, order a cup of coffee with some food, and just relax. It’s not your typical restaurant or diner, which makes this place so unique. They are closed on Sundays, but open at 7 a.m. during the week and 8 a.m. on Saturdays.
