Danny’s Drive-In

Danny’s Drive-In in Ashland began serving breakfast last weekend. This morning, our Breakfast in the Skook crew decided to give it a try. It is located at 630 South Hoffman Boulevard in Ashland. We had a full crew this morning consisting of Bryan, Matt, Mike, Tonto, and our special recurring guest Kevin.

Our crew arrived at Danny’s around 8:50 a.m. to a very small crowd. That crowd would grow by the end of our meals. Danny’s breakfast menu is small, but that was expected considering they just started serving it last week. Bryan ordered the Raisin French Toast with a side of bacon. Matt went with the two-egg meal (scrambled) with homefries and a side of sausage. Mike ended up ordering two eggs (over-easy) with homefries and a side of bacon. Both Tonto and Kevin ordered the three-egg cheese omelette (Tonto had a side of scrapple while Kevin chose a side of bacon) with homefries and toast.

Establishment: 2.5/5 – Plenty of parking for a tiny diner. The interior only had five very small booths but there were plenty of seats at the diner counter. There was no place for our party of five to sit together except for the counter. Once the place got filled up, it felt very crammed.

Service: 2.5/5 – This score has nothing to do with our waitress – she was very nice and kept our coffee flowing. We didn’t like how the utensils were placed directly on the counter instead of napkins; it didn’t seem very sanitary. It took Matt, Mike, Tonto and Kevin 28-minutes to receive their food while Bryan had to wait an additional 7-minutes for his meal. We could tell they were just getting used to the breakfast crowd.

Appearance: 2.5/5 – While most of our food looked appetizing, Bryan was appalled at the size of his Raisin French Toast. The picture really doesn’t do it justice. It was the skimpiest French Toast meal with the thinnest piece of toast he’s ever received – and he had to wait 35-minutes for it! He was not happy to say the least. Oh, and to top it all off, his bacon was lukewarm at best when it came out! Kevin also thought his omelette was on the smaller side.

Taste: 4/5 – Matt thought the sausage was excellent and there were no complaints from Mike and Tonto. Everyone enjoyed their rye toast and Tonto liked the scrapple, even though it could have been a little more crispy. Bryan could barely taste his French Toast before it was finished.

Price: 4/5 – The price was cheap – $38 for the five of us. The only knock is that the portion sizes were on the smaller side, so take that in to consideration before you come here.

All in all, Danny’s Drive-In still has a ways to go before it becomes known for their breakfasts. Our opinions differed, some giving it average grades while others gave it below-average. Bryan ended up going home hungry, which was a first for him. Mike felt bad and ended up buying him a bag of Party Mix to eat on the way home. If you’re ever in the Ashland area and craving a decent breakfast, we’d suggest heading to May’s Drive-In before considering Danny’s.
