After a one-month hiatus, our crew decided it was time to hop back on the breakfast horse and ride into Primrose to check out the fare served at the St. Nicholas Hall. The Men’s Holy Name Society serves their breakfasts there once a month from September to May.
Our crew this morning consisted of Bryan, Mike and Tonto. The three of us rolled in to the St. Nicholas parking lot a few minutes before 9 a.m. It took us about five minutes to find the entrance – we tried the front doors but they were locked. Tonto was leading the way and looked like Sandra Bullock in Birdbox trying to find the way inside. In his defense, they didn’t have any signs pointing us to the doors we were supposed to enter. Very sneaky of them – maybe they didn’t want us there? Once we found our way inside, we paid our $9 per person and found a table. Their breakfasts are served buffet style. Their food options were scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, scrapple, homefries, mini pancakes, mini French Toast, and bleenies. Yes, bleenies! No bacon, which was a little disappointing, but oh well.

Establishment: 4/5 – The breakfast was served in the smaller banquet area of the social hall. The main section that usually hosts weddings and proms was blocked off. The seating area was spacious and it didn’t feel as though we were sitting on top of other people.
Service: 5/5 – It was a serve-yourself buffet so that was pretty nice. The volunteers were busy bussing tables and refilling the chafers with fresh food. They also gave us our own carafe of coffee at our table. No complaints here.
Appearance: 4/5 – Everything looked hot and fresh as you can probably tell by the pictures. All of the silverware and dishes were also clean. We didn’t feel like we needed a tetanus shot after eating there like some places we’ve been to in the past (cough…Park Restaurant…cough).
Taste: 4/5 – Taste was above average. The eggs were cooked well and weren’t hard like some you would find at buffets. The scrapple was thin and crispy – nothing to write home about. The sausage was moist and had a nice flavor to it. Bleenies were also thin and tasted like your typical block party fare. We thought it was a great idea to include the bleenies with their breakfast – it’s something different.
Price: 4.5/5 – $9 for an all-you-can-eat buffet is not bad. The only reason we took a half point off the rating is because the food options were not very plentiful (no bacon). The price did include drinks (coffee, milk, juices, etc.).
All in all, we were happy with our experience at the St. Nicholas Hall. Their breakfast was fresh and filling. Not only that, but because of the efficiency of having a buffet, we were in and out of there in only 30 minutes. If you want a quick breakfast and are craving some potato pancakes with your eggs, check out the breakfast served monthly at St. Nicks!
