The South Cass Township Citizens Fire Company held its bi-weekly outdoor breakfast this Sunday and the boys were there to taste what the Miners had to offer.

We didn’t realize South Cass held bi-weekly breakfasts until we stumbled upon a Facebook flyer. If anyone knows of any fire company or other breakfast specials, let us know on our Facebook page! We always love trying new places!

Sunday’s crew consisted of Bryan, Kevin, Matt, Mike, and Tonto…yes, the Mighty Tonto has dusted off his fork and decided to join the lads on this cool August morning. Cool, indeed. In fact, Kevin was so cold that he voiced his displeasure with the fact we were eating outside. Luckily Mike had an extra windbreaker in his car to shield Kevin from the morning’s chill.

South Cass Fire Co.’s breakfast was exclusively outdoors. There’s a table set up outside a pavilion where you order and pay. You receive an order number and wait to be called for your food. The menu included nine different meal options with multiple omelettes. You can add meat, pancakes or French toast to any meal. Drinks were provided at a separate table where you can serve yourself coffee, orange juice, or tomato juice for $2 with unlimited refills.

Matt, our county renowned “Sausage King”, bucked his trend of ordering plain eggs with sausage on the side and instead chose the Sausage and Cheese omelette. Bryan and Tonto both ordered the UTV 54 omelette, which included bacon, sausage, ham, scrapple, and plenty of cheese. Homefries and toast were included. Mike ordered the Brush Truck omelette, which included an omelette of your choice (he chose Veggie) served over homefries topped with gravy. Kevin ended up getting the Egg sandwich with bacon.

While waiting for our food, we sat down at a picnic table under the pavilion and talked about how nice it was to eat outdoors. There aren’t many restaurants that serve breakfast outside, so it was a nice change. Sure, Kevin was cold, but he tried to stay warm by walking around and talking to old acquaintances he couldn’t remember the names of. Establishment gets a 5/5 on the score card.

I’m not sure how many volunteers were in the back cooking, but it was enough. Service was fast! We got our food in less than 10 minutes and it was brought out and served to us at the table. We did get there a little early (8 a.m.) and beat the rush by about 30 minutes, but we were happy with how fast we received our food. 5/5 for service.

Food appearance scores a 4/5. Is that brown gravy on Mike’s omelette? He was expecting white sausage gravy. We’ll see how it tastes…

Taste gets a 3.5/5. Our meals were good. Kevin’s sandwich hit the spot. The omelettes were real cheesy, which is right up our alley. There was plenty of assorted meats in Bryan’s omelette. The brown gravy over Mike’s omelette was okay – nothing special. The toast wasn’t toasted long enough and ended up being a little soggy. The potatoes were pretty tasteless with little to no seasoning. No complaints otherwise – it was a pretty standard breakfast meal.

The price? Eh. Kind of expensive but it’s for a good cause so we chose to look past it. They accept credit cards so you don’t have to bring cash with you. 2/5.

We had a good morning in South Cass. We got to sit outside, make fun of a shivering Kevin, watch Tonto struggle to finish his omelette (he didn’t), and enjoy the most important meal of the day. Oh, and the fire company was holding a Basket Auction at the same time in their adjacent building, so we got to bid on some fancy items. Our crew will definitely be back for breakfast another time (we need to try the pancakes and French toast). We recommend you do the same and stop by for a decent meal and donate to a local hosey. Below is a schedule of their upcoming breakfasts and other events for the rest of 2024.
