May’s Drive-In

May’s Drive-In in Ashland was the winner of our “Choose Our Location” poll. Our crew made the drive up to the Schuylkill-Columbia county border this morning to check it out. Boy, were we in for a treat!

May’s is located at the very end of Ashland, on the corner of Route 61, across the street from the football field. They are known for their ice cream, but they also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. We arrived around 8:30AM and their parking lot was packed. The waitresses had us seat ourselves, which we did. Unfortunately, the tables that were available were not cleaned yet and the staff didn’t seem to be in a hurry to clean them off. This didn’t bother us – we sat down anyway.

For breakfast, Bryan ordered the Sausage, Egg & Cheese Omelette with a side of raisin toast. Matt went with the #6, which should be called the “Matt Special” since he orders the same meal wherever we go. This meal included two eggs (scrambled), a choice of meat (Matt chose sausage), home fries and toast (wheat). Mike ordered the #7, or the “Sloppy Hungry Man”. This meal consisted of three eggs scrambled mixed with home fries, onions, peppers and choice of meat (Mike also chose sausage). Tonto decided to go with the special-of-the-day, the Creamed Chipped Beef, which was served over home fries and toast. He also ordered a side of bacon.

Establishment: 5/5 – Great atmosphere! May’s is surprisingly large inside. There are two dining rooms that included plenty of tables and booths. There are even a few two-person booths if you wanted a more intimate setting (Tonto and Mike were tempted to sit in one of them). It has the look of an older-style restaurant.

Service: 3/5 – Our waitresses were accommodating and very nice, and we only waited 14-minutes from the time we ordered until we received our meal. The reason they lost two points is because we had to wait rather long for our check. In fact, Bryan had to walk up to the counter and ask for it.

Appearance: 4/5 – Our meals looked great and our coffee mugs were large. The only reason we took off a point is because the sausage in the omelette was not cut up. They just kind of threw the whole links in there. This didn’t affect the taste, though…

Taste: 5/5 – Delicious. Scrumptious. Delectable. Mouthwatering. What other adjective can I include in here? Our meals were good — plain and simple. Everything was home cooked and hot. The peppers in the Sloppy Hungry Man were fresh and not frozen like the ones from Coney last week. The home fries were also freshly cut. Bryan thought his omelette was amazing – especially the sausage links. He also raved about their raisin toast, which more restaurants should serve. The Mighty Tonto thoroughly enjoyed his creamed chipped beef and even took his leftovers home (You didn’t really think he’d finish it, did you?). We were so full from our meals that we didn’t have any room for ice cream!

Price: 3.5/5 – Prices were about average. Our bill ended up around $34 for the four of us. The food prices are actually really cheap, but the $1.50 coffees raised our bill a little. We didn’t complain, however, since the waitress left the carafe at our table and the mugs were large.

All in all, we highly recommend coming to May’s Drive-In and checking out their breakfast. Our meal was superb and if it wasn’t for the drive, we’d come here often. They are open seven days a week from 7AM – 8:30PM, but only serve breakfast until 11.
